At Hartburn Primary School we recognise the importance of language in the social, emotional and intellectual development of children. All adults in school have high expectations of all children and strive to support and encourage their development at all stages of learning. Children learn to love and appreciate the complexity of vocabulary and how to express themselves using appropriately chosen, ambitious words. Children have a genuine love of books and read for pleasure. We develop pupils’ abilities within an integrated programme of speaking and listening, reading and writing.
Children are inspired to become readers who read for purpose and enjoyment and are given opportunities to interrelate the requirements of English within a broad and balanced curriculum. At Hartburn, reading is the key to unlock all curriculum areas. Carefully selected texts and poems demand higher order thinking skills and create opportunities to debate and discuss a local and global responsibilities. Through our Hartburn Reading Spine, children develop strategies and resilience to better understand their experiences and improve their coping skills.
Children write for a clear purpose and audience demonstrating skills needed to write effectively across a variety of genres. Through varied sentence structure, careful planning and imaginative flair, children’s writing informs and enthrals the reader.
Children begin their journey in Early Years getting prepared for phonics. These key areas involve auditory and visual skills as well as sound and speech discrimination. From the start, children are immersed in a language rich environment where verbal communication is key and mature language is both modelled and encouraged.
Children enter school with varying levels of language skills and we recognise the need for differentiation and progression in the tasks we set in order to enable each child to develop its potential to the highest degree possible.
