Phonics & Reading

At Hartburn Primary School, we introduce phonics using the Jolly Phonics programme. Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers. As the children progress through the phonic stages, we use a wide range of resources to embed what they have learnt.

We use the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme for early readers, to enable children to become fluent and confident. We also have a vast range of Tree Tops and project X books for our developing readers. Our collection contains over 800 books providing a rich and varied choice of writing styles, genres and artwork styles at every level.
