Jolly Phonics is our chosen Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme. Jolly Phonics provides a multi sensory approach to the early stages of reading and introduces sounds and tricky words so that children are confident independent readers.
Jolly Phonics Readers are a series of decodable reading books which provide the best start for children just starting to read. At every stage, the words are within reach of the children as they use their letter sound knowledge and the tricky words already taught. Each level of the readers builds on knowledge and skills previously learned so that they are able to practise blending until it is the automatic response to working out new words. Daily phonics lessons in Reception and KS1 follow the sequence Revist, Teach, Practise and Apply.

From Y2 through to Year 6 we use a layered approach to guided reading which develops key reading & study skills.
A variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, enable children to access, interpret and understand what they are reading. This approach promotes the child’s knowledge and understanding of authorial intent and children can speculate on the tone and purpose of each text, as well as consider its wider themes and audience.
The core reading skills are:
- The Retrieval of specific information
- Inference, including Deductive Reasoning
- Evaluative & Summative Assessment of text
- Vocabulary Development: Word Knowledge & Word Choice
- Study Skills that promote wider independent study
We also have a vast range of Oxford Reading Tree titles including Tree Tops and project X books for our developing and fluent readers. These are intended to be shared and discussed with an adult. Our collection contains over 800 books providing a rich and varied choice of writing styles, genres and artwork styles at every level.
Children can also chose a library book to take home that will develop their love for reading and expand their vocabulary.
